Plans for the California Cup, a seven-race program involving California-breds for purses worth $1 million, were announced Wednesday at Santa Anita.

The races, which are patterned after a similar program in its third year in Maryland, will be run on Nov. 3, 1990, during the Oak Tree season at Santa Anita.

The richest race will be a $300,000 race for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles. There will be three $150,000 races--for 3-year-olds and up at one mile on grass, for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs, and for fillies and mares going about 6 1/2 furlongs on grass. The two $100,000 stakes will be for 2-year-olds--colts and fillies--who will run 1 1/16 miles, and there’s also a $50,000 handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles.

Wells Fargo Bank is sponsoring the $300,000 race, and sponsors will be sought for the other stakes. The California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Assn. may run the California Cup at other tracks in future years.
