THE SIDELINES : Helms to Interview for Reds Post
Cincinnati Reds interim Manager Tommy Helms, who wants a chance to stay on as manager for the 1990 season, says he is meeting next week with Reds General Manager Bob Quinn.
Quinn, contacted in San Francisco where he is attending the World Series, said Tuesday’s meeting amounts to an interview for Helms. Quinn is sticking to his previous statements that Helms is among as many as a dozen candidates for the managerial job.
In Cincinnati, Helms said he is clinging to hope that he will get the job, but he hasn’t been told anything by the Reds.
“I don’t know what to believe,” Helms said. “Like I’ve said before, it’s just a situation where you wait and see what happens. . . . I don’t really feel good about it right now.”
Quinn said he will meet with at least two candidates this weekend, but declined to identify them. He has said the candidates also include former Yankees Manager Dallas Green, former Houston Manager Hal Lanier and former Cleveland Manager Doc Edwards. Quinn has declined to identify the others.
