NORTHWEST : BUENA PARK : Council Raises Water Rate, Adds Sewer Fee

Share

Starting in January, residents and businesses will be paying more for the water they use, in the form of a higher water rate and a new sewer user fee based on a percentage of water use.

In measures adopted by the City Council this week, the water rate will rise 5%, to 81 cents per thousand gallons. The sewer fee will amount to 6% of each water bill. The city expects the rate increase and fee to generate about $263,300 for the remainder of fiscal 1990 and $526,600 for each fiscal year thereafter. The added revenue will be used to make sewer improvements.

Councilman Donald L. Bone, although he supported the water rate increase, disagreed with the structure for the sewer fee, arguing that water used for gardening has no effect on the sewer system. “We will be paying an additional 6% for water that never reaches the sewer system,” Bone said.

Mayor Donna L. Chessen asked that a provisional plan for hardship cases be drawn up and studied before January.
