NEWPORT BEACH : COSTA MESA / NEWPORT / IRVINE : Masked Men Stage Quick Jewelry Heist

Three men wearing Halloween masks smashed their way into a posh Newport Beach jewelry store Thursday and stole the entire inventory--in about 90 seconds.

The lightning-quick robbery occurred at about 10 a.m., just after the Carol Klein Fine Jewelry store in the Newport Center had opened.

Police spokesman Sgt. Bob Oakley said the jewelry had not even been laid out in the display cases for the day when the first robber, weighing about 200 pounds, broke through the locked glass front door by throwing himself through it.

A second man rushed in and started tying up a female employee and customer. Another toted two plastic garbage cans and began filling them with jewels from the closet-size safe.

“It was very well planned, very well executed,” Oakley said. “These guys were very deliberate. They didn’t want to hurt anybody. . . . They went to steal jewelry.”

Within 10 minutes after the heist, officers found a Buick parked at 19 Corporate Parkway. It had been stolen Wednesday in Anaheim.

While the dollar loss was still being calculated, officers said they could safely estimate the value of the jewels at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The man who burst through the door was described as wearing a dark jacket and pants, a cap and white cotton gloves. A second man had a light-colored jacket and New Balance athletic shoes.

Oakley said there was no indication that the heist was tied to any others.
