Mother, Daughter Know Their Spelling

The mother-daughter team of Ericka and Priscilla Garvin correctly spelled 10 final words to win the title of Best Business Spellers at Placentia’s first Business Spelling Bee for Literacy.

The Garvins of Yorba Linda represented the Bank of Yorba Linda, The teams of Reed Royalty and Sandy Ruffalo from Pacific Bell and Peggy Dinsmore and Dorothy van Breeman from the Placentia Library District finished in a tie for second place.

The Placentia Library Literacy Services and the Placentia Chamber of Commerce showcased the spelling talents of the 15 teams that participated. To enter, each team paid $175, which will be used by the literacy services to continue its program.

The top bid of $6,500 by Barry Brief of Laguna Beach won him a date with Zoe Simonsen of Corona del Mar at the recent second annual Marriott Guys and Dolls Auction Gala, a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The date was one of 28 with some of Orange County’s most eligible single men and women. The auction attracted 700 guests to the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Tennis Club.

The auction raised $60,000 for research, patient care and treatment of cystic fibrosis.

A second-place national award for Operation and Maintenance Excellence for 1989 was presented to the County Sanitation Districts of Orange County by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The award, accepted by Wayne Sylvester, sanitation districts general manager, was presented for work at the districts’ secondary treatment plants, which process more than 10 million gallons of sewage a day.

A 1989 Honda Prelude was presented to Fullerton College by American Honda Corp. for hands-on training by automotive technology students, according to Mike Burns, dean of technical education who accepted the vehicle.

Maureen J. Williams, director of public relations at Childrens Hospital of Orange County in Orange, was named winner of the annual Touchdown Awards competition in the Publications/Single Purpose category.

She was chosen for her hospital guide pamphlet for patients and parents. By enlisting the aid of design students, Williams produced the guide for $1,500.

The contest was sponsored by the American Hospital Assn.’s American Society for Hospital Marketing and Public Relations.

Anaheim resident James D. Beisner, chief deputy coroner of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department, was selected Manager of the Year by the California State Coroners’ Assn.

Garden Grove resident Marge English, a counter waitress for 30 years at Belisle’s restaurant in Garden Grove, was honored by the eatery, which has declared October as Marge English Month.

Erin A. Herdeg, co-owner of a Santa Ana marketing communications agency, has been elected president-elect of the Orange County Chapter of Women in Communications.

She will assume her post in 1990 and will enter a year’s training period to prepare her for the role of president. During her training she will oversee production of the group’s media directory and supervise committee reports.

In addition to the new post, the Santa Ana resident recently was named recipient of the Golden State Award and Award of Honor by the Who’s Who Historical Society of California.

The North Orange County Business and Professional Womens’ Organization has honored Elizabeth Sickler, who works in real estate in Yorba Linda, as winner of its Young Careerist Award. Dr. Sharon K. Kawai, medical director of St. Jude Rehabilitation Center in Fullerton, was named Woman of Achievement.

Francis Sullivan of Costa Mesa-based Sullivan Concrete Textures, was named Professional of the Year, and Supervisor Thomas F. Riley was given the Open Space Award at the recent Landscape Architectural Foundation banquet in Irvine. The group reported it raised $15,000 at the banquet for its scholarship program.

Newport Beach resident Leonard Shane, chairman and managing officer of the Huntington Beach-based Mercury Savings & Loan, will be recognized for 50 years of public service by the American Assn., Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.

Shane has been active in Jewish causes and in civic and philanthropic organizations. A lifelong Democrat, he helped to create the Hubert Humphrey Center for Social Ecology at Ben-Gurion University and his family endowed a chair in education at the university.

Shane, who will be honored at a tribute dinner Jan. 21 in Beverly Hills, called the event “the capstone of my career.”
