U.S. Funds

Your story (Part A, Oct. 14) about $433,000 of U.S. taxpayer money being given to the opponents of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez by the Republican Party’s international institute is hair-raising, to say the least.
Supporting political opponents of Central America’s only democratic leader and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, to boot, is improper on its face.
Beyond that, why is an American political party in charge of disbursing U.S. taxpayer money at all?
