THE SIDELINES : China Beats N. Korea in Soccer

SINGAPORE — China beat North Korea 1-0 today after the United Arab Emirates and Qatar played to a 1-1 tie in the final round of the Asia qualifying competition for World Cup soccer.
China’s goal was scored in the 83rd minute, when Xie Yu Xin headed in the ball. The United Arab Emirates’ goal was scored by Khalil Ghanim Mubarak in the 18th minute. Ali Sulaiti headed in the ball to score for Qatar in the 37th minute. Sulaiti failed to convert a penalty shot in the 45th minute.
Teams from South Korea, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also are taking part in the tournament, which will run through the end of this week.
