May Run for President in ‘96, Sen. Gramm Says

DALLAS — Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Tex.), who has raised $3.7 million for his 1990 reelection campaign, said he may use that race as a springboard to a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1996.
Gramm told the Dallas Morning News that after he read in news reports that he was a potential presidential candidate in 1996, he decided: “Maybe I should start thinking of myself.”
He added that his Senate campaign war chest could help him in a future presidential campaign.
