Shirley Solomon; Palisades Anti-Drilling Activist

Share

Shirley Solomon, who with a handful of neighbors formed No Oil Inc., a grass-roots group that for nearly 20 years has successfully fought Occidental Petroleum’s bid to drill in the Pacific Palisades, died last week.

Her husband, James, said she had been battling bone cancer for several months and died Oct. 17 at a Santa Monica hospital.

She was 70.

In March, 1970, Mrs. Solomon, a professional public relations executive, and about a dozen of her Palisades neighbors formed the tenacious organization which cut across city and county lines and boasted several hundred members.

At her request there were no services and her ashes have been scattered at sea.
