NATION IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Overcrowding Cited in Prison Uprising
A fiery uprising by 1,200 inmates that left 47 people injured at a Pennsylvania prison may have been caused by overcrowding and inmates’ anger over policy changes, the warden said. Prisoners remained locked in their cells and a state of emergency was in effect at the prison in Camp Hill. During Wednesday’s rampage, eight guards were held hostage, some guards were beaten and four buildings were torched. Prison Supt. Robert Freeman said inmates were upset by changes in medical care policy and over a decision not to allow families to bring in food during extended family-day visits.
