An influx of new players along with new and bigger contracts have pushed the San Antonio Spurs over the NBA’s $9.8-million annual salary cap.
The signing of rookie Sean Elliott to a five-year, $9-million contract edged the team over the cap by about $500,000, said Bob Bass, assistant to the Spurs’ chairman.
The Spur contracts currently total $10.3 million. Other big-money players are David Robinson, who is scheduled to earn in excess of $2.5 million this season; Terry Cummings, who will make $1.7 million; Maurice Cheeks, who will get $1 million, and forward Frank Brickowski, who will receive $825,000.
The league allowed the Spurs to go over the top because Elliott’s contract averages $1.8 million a year but reportedly starts at $1.1 million. It reportedly tops off at $2.5 million.
