CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SANTA CLARA COUNTY : Legal Aid Staff, Lawyers Walk Out

Lawyers and staff of the Legal Aid Society of Santa Clara County have gone on strike in a dispute over job security, the first legal services walkout in California in more than a decade. Seventeen employees, members of the United Legal Assistance Workers, including five lawyers, walked out this week. The agency provides legal help to the poor. Striking lawyers have continued to make required appearances in court in ongoing cases but are not handling new cases or long-term projects.
