A 38-year-old man believed to be a transient was hit by a car and killed early Saturday while standing on an interstate freeway, the county coroner’s office said.

Daniel MacDonald was facing west in the left-hand lane of northbound Interstate 5, about 900 feet south of Balboa Avenue, when he was hit at 4:45 a.m. by a car driven by Rick Maloney of Mountain View, Deputy Coroner Charles Kelly said.

Maloney was apparently unable to avoid the accident and he was not ticketed in connection with the accident, Kelly said.

Authorities believed MacDonald was a transient because he had only a Metropolitan Transit System card in his pockets, Kelly said.
