Treasure Hunt in Old Well Kills 4
Associated Press
TYRE, Lebanon —
Four men who went down a well dating back to the Phoenician period in the hope of finding treasure suffocated and died, police said.
A police spokesman said the four, who died last week, were among a group of 10 amateurs who discovered the well in this southern port city, which was a major Phoenician trading center more than 3,000 years before Christ.
The spokesman said the well dated back to that period.
The six other people emerged safely from the 18-foot-deep well, the spokesman said.
