Some owners of a popular water-cleaning machine are entitled to refunds because the appliance actually added a harmful chemical to drinking water, the Federal Trade Commission said today.

The agency said consumers who bought the Norelco Clean Water Machine and replacement filters for them are eligible for a full refund under a recent settlement agreement reached with the manufacturer.

The commission last year charged Norelco with false advertising in its claims that the Clean Water Machine removed harmful chemicals from drinking water because the unit actually added methylene chloride, a potentially hazardous chemical, into water passing through the machine.
