NATION IN BRIEF : MICHIGAN : 145 Suits Settled in Fatal Airline Crash
A federal judge announced the settlement of the 145 remaining lawsuits against Northwest Airlines in the nation’s second-deadliest domestic airline crash, leaving McDonnell Douglas as the only defendant. Details of the settlement were not disclosed, and Northwest and plaintiffs who were questioned refused to comment because of a gag order. Phoenix-bound Northwest Flight 255 crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit on Aug. 16, 1987, killing 156 people. A 4-year-old girl now living with relatives in Alabama was the sole survivor.
