Alhambra : Scavengers Face Action

Recyclable materials such as newspapers, cans and glass may look like throwaways when stacked along the curb, but it will be against the law to steal them if the City Council decides to prohibit scavengers from taking the materials, which can be sold for cash.

The City Council on Monday introduced an ordinance banning scavenging of all recyclable materials. An ordinance now bans newspaper scavenging only.

The proposed ordinance is designed to ensure the success of the city’s pilot curbside recycling program. After the program was launched Oct. 20, some residents reported that scavengers, instead of the designated collector, Athens Disposal Co., were picking up materials.
