Decision on Development Delayed

El Camino College trustees have delayed until late November a decision on developing a shopping center on a 15-acre campus parking lot.
The board listened to conflicting testimony for three hours Monday from three developers and neighboring residents about the impact of developing the 1,100-space lot at the southwest corner of Crenshaw and Redondo Beach boulevards.
Trustees are considering the development deal as a way to bring extra cash to El Camino. Part of that would pay for one or more parking structures, which would double the number of parking spaces at the lot.
Several residents told trustees that they oppose the idea because they believe a shopping center would draw more traffic to the already congested area and that students would continue to park in surrounding neighborhoods rather than use a parking structure.
Board President Patrick Scott said the trustees will discuss proposals from three developers--Quong Enterprises of Orange, Champion Development of Long Beach and IDM Corp. of Long Beach--at a private meeting with the college’s attorneys Nov. 13.
The board said it it will decide at its Nov. 27 meeting whether to proceed with the idea.
