WORLD : U.S., Soviets Join for 1st Time in U.N. Measure on Human Rights
The United States and Soviet Union joined for the first time today to sponsor a General Assembly resolution calling on all nations to respect human rights and abandon the use of force except in defense.
The resolution urges all nations to uphold the principles of the U.N. Charter but offered no specific proposals. Participants in the joint news conference stressed the symbolic value of U.S.-Soviet cooperation on political principles.
“Perhaps the most important thing about this resolution is not its specific language, but what it symbolizes as a new beginning at the United Nations--a new spirit of constructive cooperation,” said a joint U.S.-Soviet statement.
Assistant U.S. Secretary of State John Bolton said, “The resolution is not the alpha and omega of all issues. I like to think it is the alpha, however.”
The resolution calls on all nations to work cooperatively through the United Nations to ensure international peace and security and honor its charter.
