Mason Plays Well in UCLA Scrimmage

Zan Mason was the most impressive of UCLA’s four freshmen in the Bruins’ annual intrasquad basketball scrimmage Thursday night. The 6-foot-7 forward from Westchester High scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds in front of 3,915 at Pauley Pavilion.

Tracy Murray, who led the nation last season with an average of 44.3 points a game at Glendora High School, scored 17 points, but made only four of 15 shots, including just one of eight inside three-point range.

“There’s no reason that he should be in midseason shooting form on Nov. 2,” Coach Jim Harrick said. “Murray has shown enough for me to know that he’ll do some playing for us this year.”

As for the other two freshmen in UCLA’s highly regarded recruiting class of 1989, Mitchell Butler had seven points and two assists and 6-foot-11 Rodney Odom had six points and two rebounds.

“Mitchell is adjusting to playing guard,” Harrick said of the 6-5 Butler, who played guard, forward and center at tiny Oakwood School in North Hollywood. “Rodney looked OK.”

Senior forward Trevor Wilson had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore forward Don MacLean had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

UCLA will play Athletes in Action Nov. 15 in an exhibition game at Pauley Pavilion and the Australian Olympic team Nov. 21.
