Quarterback Dee Dowis threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and set a national record for rushing Saturday as Air Force beat Army, 29-3, to win the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dowis rushed for 141 yards in 24 carries to set a career record of 3,336 yards rushing for a quarterback. The previous record of 3,299 was held by Tampa’s Freddie Solomon.

Dowie also raised his total for the year to 1,010 yards and became the only player in Air Force history to rush for 1,000 yards twice. He had more than 1,300 yards rushing in 1987.

The victory over Army returned the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to the Air Force. The trophy goes to the military academy team with the best record in round-robin play. Army won the trophy last year.

The winner of the trophy automatically qualifies as the host team for the Liberty Bowl. But the Falcons won’t know whether they will be playing in the Memphis bowl game until after the Western Athletic Conference champion has been determined.

The WAC champion is committed to the Holiday Bowl and Air Force, 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, is still in contention for that bowl.

The defeat dropped Army’s record to 5-3 and halted a three-game winning streak.

Wyoming 56, Colorado State 35--Tom Corontzos tossed three touchdown passes and ran for two as the Cowboys won at Laramie, Wyo.

Wyoming intercepted Colorado State quarterbacks three times in the final 7:15. The last interception, Paul Wallace’s second of the day, was returned 21 yards for a touchdown that put Wyoming up 56-28 with 2:46 to play.

Wyoming is 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Colorado State fell to 4-5-1 and 3-3.
