No New Medflies Found in Santa Clara County
United Press International
SAN JOSE —
Medfly traps have turned up empty, the first sign that Santa Clara County’s infestation has been eradicated, authorities said.
“So far as we know, nothing has come up. We’ve caught tons of sterile flies, but that’s all,” Bob Clement, head of the county’s pest detection program, said.
The agricultural pest has not been detected since helicopters sprayed the insecticide malathion on 11 square miles of Mountain View, Los Altos and Sunnyvale and state officials released millions of sterile male Medflies in September.
