Twisters, Heavy Rains Destroy Alabama Homes

Tornadoes and drenching rains on Wednesday damaged dozens of homes in parts of Alabama, officials said.

Twisters that touched down near the Dothan, Ala., area, destroyed three houses and a restaurant, damaged six other businesses and caused minor damage to about 40 homes. A woman was slightly injured when her mobile home was blown into a pond about 40 miles southwest of Dothan.

Tornado damage also was reported south of Samson and in Headland, both in Alabama. Thunderstorm winds damaged a house trailer and peanut wagons near Malvern.

Heavy rains from the storms caused flooding across most of southern Alabama. Nearly 10 inches of rain fell in Florala, 7 inches in Dothan and more than 5 inches in Mobile.

Showers and thunderstorms were reported from southern Arkansas to Louisiana, southern Mississippi, the southern half of Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, Ohio and southeast Indiana.
