Lech Walesa, the shipyard electrician who led Solidarity’s peaceful march to power in Poland, flew to Canada and the United States today to ask for financial aid for his country.

“I count on there being Columbuses in America who will discover Poland,” the 46-year-old union leader told the official news agency PAP at Warsaw airport before leaving on his first visit to the Western Hemisphere, which will include an international labor union conference in Venezuela.
