Detectives Friday arrested two teen-agers, a boy and a girl, suspected of the drive-by shooting death of a 17-year-old Van Nuys youth, the Los Angeles Police Department reported Friday.

Walter Aldana was shot late Thursday in front of an apartment building in the 7000 block of Fulton Avenue, Lt. Al Corella said. One of two people in a passing car shot Aldana in what appeared to be a gang-related incident, he said. The assailants fled southward on Fulton Avenue.

Aldana, mortally wounded, apparently ran to the rear of the apartment building and tried to take cover under a pickup truck, Corella said.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Aldana dead at the scene.

Police made the arrests at a home in Southwest Los Angeles, Sgt. Ted Hanson said.

The girl is believed to have been driving the car while the boy fired several shots out the window, Hanson said. Both are members of a downtown-area gang, he said. They were being held at Sylmar Juvenile Hall, Hanson said.
