A man sought in last month’s shooting of a pregnant woman and her husband has been arrested for a traffic violation, it was reported Sunday.

Police in the nearby community of Burlington, where the arrest was made Saturday, refused to confirm a report in the Boston Sunday Herald that William Bennett was wanted in the shooting.

The attack killed attorney Carol Stuart and her baby, who was delivered by Cesarean section. Her husband, Charles Stuart, remains hospitalized.

Bennett, 39, of Boston’s Mission Hill section, was arrested at the Burlington home of his girlfriend, said Burlington police Lt. Arnold Christiansen. He said the arrest, for a traffic violation, was made at the request of the Boston police.

Boston police refused to comment on the reports, and they refused to confirm or deny that they had Bennett in custody on any charge, an officer said Saturday.

Bennett’s mother, Pauline Bennett, told the Herald her son was wanted in the attack.

The couple were shot as they left a hospital where they had attended a birthing class.
