Day-Laborer Site Opened

In response to “Sensible Day-Labor Solution” (editorial, Oct. 28):

It is interesting to see how Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores finds herself powerful enough to go against the federally imposed 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Is not the law created for all to follow?

The Immigration and Naturalization Service has been spending millions of dollars, with some success, to rid our streets of the day laborers who have illegally entered our country.

Yet, the city of Los Angeles finds itself prominent enough to go against the statutes imposed by the government of the United States. Is this the type of policy that our federal government will allow from its urban centers? It shouldn’t be.

Our local city government has found what appears to be an effective means of dealing with the problem of day laborers. In order to eliminate any conflict of interest between federal, state and local governments, the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 should be repealed by the federal government and left in the hands of our state and local officials to hash out (as was the abortion issue).
