NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Winner Confirmed in Yonkers Recount

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A recount of the votes in Yonkers, N.Y., confirmed the election of Republican Henry Spallone, a vigorous opponent of the city’s court-ordered desegregation plan. Spallone had been proclaimed mayor, ousting Nicholas Wasicsko by 4,466 votes. But in the first stage of the recount, Wasicsko suddenly picked up nearly 1,700 votes, and an election commissioner said the result could be reversed. The final, unofficial tally showed 29,294 for Spallone and 25,021 for Wasicsko, a Democrat who had urged compliance with the desegregation plan. “That’s the ball game,” Wasicsko said.
