SP Telecom to Buy Long-Distance Venture: SP Telecom, a unit formed by Southern Pacific Transportation to build a fiber-optic telecommunications network along railroad rights of way, signed a letter of intent to acquire Digital Signal of Southfield, Mich., for an undisclosed price. Digital operates a 15,000-mile leased fiber-optic network serving 60 long-distance carriers nationwide.
