CBS, running third in the prime-time ratings, canceled “Peaceable Kingdom” Thursday and placed two other first-year series on hiatus. “Island Son” will be back very soon, the network promised, but “Wolf” isn’t likely to reappear until much later in the season.

“Peaceable Kingdom,” which debuted Sept. 20 with Lindsay Wagner starring as a zoo director, will be replaced next month by “Beauty and the Beast.” “Wolf” and “Island Son” will be replaced in the Tuesday 9-11 p.m. slot by movies, starting Nov. 28 with “Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.”

“Beauty and the Beast” will return for its third season Dec. 12 with a two-hour installment in which the character played by Linda Hamilton makes her last appearance. The actress is being written out so she can spend more time with her infant, a CBS spokeswoman said. Then the following night, Dec. 13, the show will move into its regular time slot, Wednesdays at 8 p.m., with an episode introducing a new Beauty (Jo Anderson) opposite Ron Perlman’s Beast.
