Residents Group to Seek Closure of Chemical Plant

Share

A group of Lynwood residents is expected to ask city officials at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to shut a chemical manufacturing plant and its incinerator in an industrial area of the city.

Ella Woods, an organizer of Lynwood Families Against Toxic Waste, said residents are concerned about odors from the Cargill Inc. plant, and fear that the incinerator may be releasing harmful materials. Officials said the council plans to discuss the issue but probably doesn’t have authority to shut down the plant, which has a state Department of Health Services’ permit to operate the incinerator. The council also may consider whether to place a moratorium on future construction of such plants.
