COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Rallies to Win in Water Polo
UC Irvine, ranked No. 2 in the nation, stopped a UC Santa Barbara rally to win its final Big West Conference water polo match of the season, 13-11, Saturday at Goleta, Calif.
Down 10-4 in the third quarter, Santa Barbara (10-18, 3-7) scored three consecutive goals to tie the match, 10-10. The Anteaters’ Dan Smoot, who led all scorers with six goals, then scored two consecutive goals, the last with 4:15 remaining. Seconds later Santa Barbara’s Brian Ballard scored to make it 12-11.
A steal by Irvine’s John Redd with 15 seconds remaining led to a goal by Tom Warde that assured the victory for the Anteaters (24-6 overall, 8-2 in the conference).
In Big West women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Fresno State 2--Ali Wood had 22 kills and Kim Collins had 20 kills, three aces and 17 digs to lead the host Anteaters (18-14, 6-12), 15-12, 16-14, 8-15, 14-16, 15-7. Fresno dropped to 10-19, 3-15.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Chapman 3, Air Force 1--Debra Waller had 17 kills and Christy Anderson had 12 digs and five kills as the Panthers (27-5) remained undefeated at home, 15-3, 7-15, 15-12, 15-4.
In Big West men’s swimming, Brian Pajer, formerly of Mission Viejo High School, won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events to lead the Anteaters (2-0, 1-0) to a 195-64 victory over Fresno State in Fresno.
In Big West women’s swimming, Fresno State defeated Irvine, 149-109. It was the first loss of the season for the Anteaters (2-1, 0-1). Debbie Babashoff, formerly of Fountain Valley High School, won both the 100- and 500-yard freestyle events.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
La Verne 94, Christ College 89--Daniel Weaver scored 29 points to lead La Verne at Christ College. Jamie McShan scored 28 for Christ College.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Biola 92, Christ College Irvine 40--Donna Polema scored 26 points and Michelle Mitchell had 19 to lead visiting Biola (1-0). Christy Kalbhenn had 12 for Christ College (1-1).
In women’s exhibition basketball:
UC Irvine 64, English Nationals 60--Junior guard Jenny Lee and freshman forward Yvonne Catala each scored 17 points for the host Anteaters.
