At least four people died instantly in a ball of flame Sunday night when their car smashed into a telephone pole in Santa Ana and the gas tank exploded.

Santa Ana Police Sgt. Doyle Smith said the driver of the car, a light blue Ford Maverick, had been drag-racing north on Bristol Street and lost control near Park Lane. The Maverick, containing at least four people, burst into flames when the gas ignited, Smith said.

The other car in the drag race left the scene. Police said they are looking for the driver of a black Corvette. Police station Supervisor Richard Coberly said that according to witnesses, the driver of the Corvette “stopped and watched the car burning a litle bit and then split.”
