An Appreciation Day has been scheduled Tuesday to honor an Irvine principal who received the national award for distinguished service from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge.

Gene Bedley of El Camino Real Elementary School received the George Washington Honor Medal Thursday at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

The Freedom Foundation presents its awards to recognize words and deeds that support U.S social and political systems. Local chapter awards also were presented to Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans for individual achievement and to Los Angeles educator Jaime Escalante for distinguished teaching.

Escalante’s work with inner-city youth has earned him a number of awards and was the basis for the film “Stand and Deliver.”

Bedley, who was the 1985 PTA National Educator of the Year, was named the national winner for his belief that “qualified education must focus on core issues of honesty, human worth, consideration of others, good citizenship and patriotism.”

An appreciation breakfast will be hosted by the El Camino staff, followed by a general assembly.
