NATION : Seale Admits Check Kiting
Former Black Panther leader Bobby Seale pleaded guilty to reduced charges today over a bad-check case involving more than $7,500 in ribs he bought for a cook-off last year.
Seale, 52, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of attempting to pass bad checks. Each count carries a possible penalty of six months.
Judge William Aurelius set sentencing for Dec. 19.
Seale’s attorney, Terry Gilbert, said his client has paid back all the money owed for the ribs he bought at a local store and a stay at a local hotel, expenses incurred for his participation in Cleveland’s National Rib Cook-Off from May 23 to 30, 1988.
“I need to get this (case) out of my hair,” Seale said outside the courtroom before making his plea.
