Now-disgraced East German leaders built luxury villas of Canadian pine with Italian mosaic floors and expensive West German bathroom fittings, the East German Berliner Zeitung said Sunday.

Under the headline, “Secret Dwellings Behind Thick Hedges,” the newspaper quoted a former member of the special state company that built the houses as saying he understood the villas were for the children, fathers, uncles and grandfathers of prominent East German politicians.

The paper said former Economics Minister Guenther Mittag had one of the villas and another belonged to the now-dismissed president of the East German Parliament, Horst Sindemann.

The paper said it is giving all the material it had researched for the article to a special parliamentary commission charged with investigating corruption among the fallen East German politicians.
