Silke Moeller, one of the world’s leading women’s sprinters, said today that athletes from East Germany should get to keep a share of their earnings from international meets.

Moeller said that until now money made by East German track and field stars at international meets has been collected by officials of the national sports federation.

“The athletes received nothing,” Moeller, who has won three world championship gold medals, was quoted as saying in the East German newspaper Der Morgen.

Moeller also suggested that more popular sports should receive more financial rewards according to “market principles.”
