A majority of the 57,800 machinists at Boeing approved a three-year contract overnight, ending a 7-week-old strike against the world’s largest commercial aircraft maker.

The results of the vote--81.4% of the workers approved the agreement--were announced by union executives at the Kingdome stadium here where the workers gathered to mark their ballots.

“The 1989 strike will be remembered as the strongest in our history,” said Tom Baker, local president of the International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

“We are glad it is over, and we are looking forward to welcoming the employees back to work Wednesday,” a Boeing spokesman said.

Under the terms of the three-year contract, the machinists will receive a wage increase of 4% the first year and 3% in the second and third years.
