ORANGE : Council to Discuss Major Development
The City Council meets tonight to discuss the East Orange General Plan and the Irvine Co.’s plans for a 7,110-acre project that will include more than 11,000 residences.
Located west of Irvine Regional Park and northwest of the company’s Santiago Hills development, and bisected by Santiago Canyon Road, the project is envisioned to include more than 440 acres of commercial developments, 3,450 apartments, 3,400 condominiums and almost 4,600 single-family homes. The total acreage for homes comes to more than 2,600.
Open and recreational space is planned on almost 3,000 acres in the project and 122 acres are set aside for schools and public buildings. Under the plan, a part of Santiago Canyon Road will be widened.
After protests from residents earlier that the initial project made no provisions for churches, the amended plan includes church sites.
In the agreement with the Orange County chapter of the Audubon Society, the Irvine Co. will also retain specific habitats for the great blue heron and other wild creatures.
