General Motors Corp., which has been on a companywide cost-cutting program for three years, is looking at slashing its white-collar work force 25% by the mid-1990s, it was reported today.

The Wall Street Journal said it had obtained an internal GM memo indicating the company was looking into a plan that would eliminate about 5,000 jobs a year, or as many as 25,000 total, for the next five years.

Details of the plan have not been completed, and employees have not been notified about it, the newspaper said. The memo said the cuts would be described to GM’s top managers Nov. 30.
