CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : TRUCKEE : Historic Sawmill Is Boarded Up
An historic steam-driven sawmill in Truckee has closed after three decades of cutting majestic Sierra Nevada trees into lumber. Carl Rice, superintendent of the mill, said the final whistle blew at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, putting about 100 men out of work. A skeleton crew will stay on through Dec. 6 to mill stockpiled wood to size. The last shipment of lumber is scheduled to go out 10 days before Christmas as one of the last steam-driven sawmills in the West goes out of business. Rice said the plant’s closure signals an end to the logging days in the small Sierra town 33 miles west of Reno.
