WORLD : Gorbachev Salutes Mazowiecki

MOSCOW —
President Mikhail S. Gorbachev today grasped the hand of Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki of Poland and said relations with the East Bloc’s only non-Communist-led government had changed for the better.
“Maybe somebody would be surprised that I want to wish you success,” Gorbachev told Mazowiecki, the former Solidarity editor whose election Aug. 24 ended more than 40 years of Communist rule in Poland. “We are no less interested that your government and your nation has success.”
