TEACHING AIDS

To find out how and when Orange County students begin to receive information regarding AIDS, Clipboard conducted a survey of each school district. The survey shows most districts provide AIDS education through existing health, drug education and family life programs. Six currently have no formalized AIDS curriculum. All districts stress abstinence as the only sure way to avoid the disease and no schools distribute condoms to their students.

The chart below covers whether the district has an AIDS curriculum and, if so, at what grade level is it first offered. It also shows the levels at which IV drug use and its relationship to AIDS, sexuality and its relationship to AIDS, homosexuality and its relationship to AIDS, and the level at which condoms are first discussed as a preventive measure.

Also indicated is whether the curriculum is offered within ESL (English as a second language) program and if there is parental option to exclude children from curriculum.
