Schoolchildren’s Obsession With Expensive Brand-Name Clothes

Clothes don’t make the man any more--they kill him, as your editorial (“More Than Just a Fad,” Nov. 14) pointed out. Children are being murdered for the type and colors of clothes they wear.

Interestingly, on the same day as your editorial, the View section ran a story about how many school districts are adopting uniforms because of the overemphasis--and overspending--of youngsters on what they wear.

The Los Angeles Unified School District would do parents a big favor by adopting uniforms. It would save us a bundle on clothing costs. But there’s an even better reason why it should: The switch just might save lives.
