MODESTO — E & J Gallo, the world’s largest winery, has bought 1,000 acres of Sonoma County vineyard land for $11 million.
The purchase of land near Asti from Heublein is part of Gallo’s long-term commitment to Sonoma County and the North Coast’s premium wines, spokesman Dan Solomon said.
About 800 acres will be planted, mainly into red wine grapes, for use in Gallo’s estate bottling production program, Solomon said. He added that wine produced from that acreage will carry an Alexander Valley viticulture designation.
