The 1,500 union employees of Caliente Race Track have struck, closing nine of the track's 10 sports wagering facilities and suspending races of thoroughbreds and greyhounds.

Caliente owner Jorge Hank Rhon said members of the union, Sindicato Alba Roja, want to be paid in U.S. currency.

Only the race and sports book at Mexicali remains open. Its workers do not belong to the union.
