NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Police Chief Orders Barry Probe Review
Washington Police Chief Isaac Fulwood Jr. ordered investigators to question all police officials who were involved in a review of an allegation that Mayor Marion Barry was hospitalized for drug overdoses in 1983, sources said. WUSA-TV reported Monday that in 1984 the police internal affairs division investigated a report by Dr. Alyce Gullattee, a Howard University drug abuse specialist, that Barry was treated for a drug overdose once at Howard and twice at D.C. General Hospital. WUSA-TV also reported that Gullattee’s statement was never sent by then-Police Chief Maurice T. Turner to the U.S. attorney. Turner said at a news conference that the allegations, which Barry called “absolutely false,” could not be corroborated.
