Carl Lewis said that track and field authorities should focus on catching athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs and called for an independent agency to administer drug tests.

The six-time Olympic gold medalist spoke before the Law and Legislation Committee of The Athletics Congress at TAC’s annual convention in Washington.

“Ben Johnson, that’s the one you want to go after,” Lewis said, adding that he was citing Johnson only as an example of a more serious case. Johnson admitted before a Canadian inquiry in Toronto this year that he had been using performance-enhancing drugs for seven years.
