A Van Nuys pedestrian was struck and fatally injured by a U.S. Postal Service van when he walked in front of it, Los Angeles police said.

Gerald Cuba, 56, of Van Nuys was pronounced dead at Valley Presbyterian Hospital shortly after the 7 p.m. accident Wednesday at Sepulveda Boulevard and Gilmore Street, Officer Ed Burns said.

The van’s driver, a Postal Service employee whose name was not released, was not cited, police said.

Burns said the victim was trying to cross Sepulveda at Gilmore Street, where there is no marked crosswalk. A witness told police that Cuba stepped into the street without looking and was immediately struck by the van, which was northbound on Sepulveda at about 30 m.p.h., Burns said.
