MILAN, Italy — Ruud Gullit, captain of the Netherlands national team and the top player on European club champion A. C. Milan, will have a third operation on his right knee today and miss the rest of the season.
Gullit, a 27-year-old forward picked as the best player in the world in a recent survey by World Soccer magazine, played his last game May 24, when Milan beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in the European Champions Cup final. He has been sidelined with knee problems that doctors say may be caused by cartilage inflammation.
The operation will be performed in the clinic of renowned Belgian surgeon Andre Martens in Pallenberg.
